How to Get the Most Out of Your iPhone: Tips and Tricks

If you’re like most iPhone users, you’re always looking for ways to make your life a little easier. The great thing about iPhones is that there are always new features to discover, and with iOS 15 software or later installed, there are plenty of options to choose from. In this feature, we’ll run you through some of the best tips and tricks we’ve found for getting the most out of your iPhone!

Tap the back for screenshot 

One useful tip is to take advantage of the new Tap Back function when taking a screenshot on your iPhone 13.

Previously, if you wanted to take a screenshot you had to press the Side button and Volume Up buttons at the same time. However, with iOS 15 there’s a new way to do it.

Now, all you need to do is tap the back of your iPhone 13 (on the right-hand side) three times quickly. This will take a screenshot and save it straight to your Photos app.

If you want to check that Tap Back is turned on, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch. From here you can also adjust the sensitivity of Tap Back, as well as turn on other helpful features such as Back Tap and Touch Accommodations.

Change your default browser and email apps

To change your default browser, go to Settings > Safari. Scroll down to the Default Browser section and tap on the browser you want to use as your default.

To change your default email app, go to Settings > Mail. Scroll down to the Default Account section and tap on the email app you want to use as your default.

Stop downloaded apps appearing on your home screen

If you want to stop new apps appearing on your home screen whenever you download them, simply go to Settings > Home Screen and select “Add to App Library Only”.

Add widgets to your home screen

One of the first things you might notice on your new iPhone is the widgets. These are Apple’s version of Android’s live tiles, and can be added to your home screen for quick access to information like the weather, your calendar, or stocks. To add a widget, simply long-press on an empty space on your home screen until the apps wiggle, then tap the ‘+’ button in the top left corner.

Get rid of entire home screens

Your home screen is a complete mess. There are so many app icons littered everywhere and it just looks icky. Well, there’s a way to get rid of entire home screens if you don’t use them.

To do this, simply press and hold on any empty space on your home screen. Once you do that, all of the icons will start to jiggle and there will be a new option at the top of the screen that says “Delete Page.”

Tap on that and then confirm that you want to delete the page and poof! It’s gone.

Dark mode schedule

Apple has finally introduced the long-awaited ability to schedule when dark mode turns on and off.

To do this, open the Settings app and scroll down to Display & Brightness.

Under the Appearance section, select Dark and then tap on Schedule.

From here, you can set specific times for dark mode to turn on and off, or have it follow a sunrise/sunset schedule.

Edit your Today view

One of the first things you might want to do is edit your Today view. This is the page that appears when you swipe right from your home screen. To do this:

– Tap and hold on an empty area of your home screen until you see the icons start to jiggle.

– Then tap the ‘+’ button in the top left corner.

– Scroll down and tap on ‘Edit Today View’

– Here you can add or remove different widgets.

– When you’ve finished, hit ‘Done’ in the top right corner.

Search for your emoji

New emoji that come with iOS 15 – there are hundreds of them. To access them, simply go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and then select Add New Keyboard. Scroll down until you see Emoji and tap it.

Now, whenever you want to use an emoji, all you need to do is tap the Globe key on your keyboard (it’s next to the Space bar) and then select the Emoji option.

Bring up camera controls 

No matter what model you have, Apple has made some great strides in terms of photo and video quality over the years.

One thing they’ve also done is make it easier to control various settings while you’re in the middle of taking a photo or recording a video.

To do this, simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen while in camera mode. This will bring up all the controls you need in one place.

From here you can change things like the flash, timer, HDR mode, and more. It’s a quick and easy way to change things up without having to go into the main settings menu.

Quickly scan a QR code

One of the most useful new features in iOS 15 is the ability to quickly scan a QR code without opening up the camera app.

To do this, simply hold your phone up to the QR code and you’ll see a notification pop up telling you what it is. Tapping on this notification will take you straight to the website or app associated with the code.

This is really handy if you’re out and about and need to scan a QR code for a website or app but don’t want to faff around opening up the camera first.

To turn this feature off, simply go to Settings > Camera and toggle off ‘Scan QR Codes’.

Burst photo button

This button allows you to take a series of photos in quick succession, which is great for capturing action shots or fast-moving subjects.

To use the Burst Photo Button, simply hold down the shutter button and your iPhone will take a burst of photos. You can then choose your favorite photo from the bunch, or even create a GIF using the burst photos.

If you’re not sure how to find the Burst Photo Button, it’s located in the Camera app under Settings > Burst Mode.
